🌾 Farming 101: Sprinklers, Fertilizer & Crop Planning
Pro Tip
Skip the myth - there is no Deluxe Sprinkler in 1.6. The real upgrade path is Iridium Sprinklers plus Pressure Nozzles from Qi's Walnut Room: a 7x7 footprint that waters your entire greenhouse with a single tile left dry.
The Three Sprinklers (No, There Is No Deluxe)
Sprinklers water tilled tiles every morning automatically, freeing your whole day. The complete, verified list:
| Sprinkler | Tiles watered | Shape | Recipe | Unlocked at |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic Sprinkler | 4 | plus-shape (adjacent tiles) | 1 Copper Bar + 1 Iron Bar | Farming 2 |
| Quality Sprinkler | 8 | 3x3 minus center | 1 Iron Bar + 1 Gold Bar + 1 Refined Quartz | Farming 6 |
| Iridium Sprinkler | 24 | 5x5 minus center | 1 Gold Bar + 1 Iridium Bar + 1 Battery Pack | Farming 9 |
A myth check for 1.6: there is no Deluxe Sprinkler in Stardew Valley. The wiki's crafting equipment list contains exactly three sprinklers, and no update through 1.6 has added a fourth. What players remember as a 'deluxe sprinkler' is an Iridium Sprinkler upgraded with a Pressure Nozzle - and that distinction matters for planning your iridium budget.
Note that sprinklers cannot be placed on sand, cannot water garden pots, and never water untilled soil. A Torch can be placed on top of a sprinkler for free lighting.
Pressure Nozzles and Enrichers
Two upgrades attach to placed sprinklers (bought in Qi's Walnut Room at 20 Qi Gems for a pack of 4, or dropped during certain Qi quests and dangerous mines):
- Pressure Nozzle: increases watering range. Basic becomes 3x3, Quality becomes 5x5, and Iridium becomes 7x7 - that is 48 tiles from a single device.
- Enricher: holds fertilizer and automatically applies it when seeds are planted nearby.
Only one upgrade can be attached per sprinkler, and picking the sprinkler up pops the upgrade back off without destroying it. For pure coverage, nozzles on Iridium Sprinklers are the endgame - four nozzled Iridium Sprinklers can water an entire Greenhouse leaving exactly one tile dry.
Field Planning and Protection
Plan fields around fixed sprinkler anchors, not the other way around. Iridium Sprinklers laid out so their 5x5 areas tessellate leave zero dry gaps; with Pressure Nozzles, a 7x7 footprint per device means one sprinkler per 49 tiles. Quality Sprinklers in a grid pattern are perfectly serviceable through mid-game and much cheaper on iridium.
Protect what you plant: a regular Scarecrow guards a circular area of about 248 tiles, while the Deluxe Scarecrow (craftable from collecting all Rarecrows) covers roughly 888. Late game, Junimo Huts from the Wizard's questline auto-harvest a 17x17 area around themselves - the ultimate labor saver on the main farm. Retaining Soil and Deluxe Retaining Soil keep soil watered overnight, useful on the island farm and in garden pots where sprinklers cannot reach.
Fertilizer Economics
Fertilizer must be applied to tilled soil before planting, and only one type per tile:
| Fertilizer | Effect | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Basic Fertilizer | Better silver/gold odds | cheap filler on gift crops |
| Quality Fertilizer | Strong gold odds | single-harvest high-value crops (pumpkin, melon, cauliflower) |
| Deluxe Fertilizer | Iridium quality possible (1.6) | gifts, bundles, iridium-quality shipping |
| Speed-Gro | Crops grow 10% faster | multi-harvest crops planted on day 1 (100g at Pierre's) |
| Deluxe Speed-Gro | 25% faster | same (80g at the Oasis) |
| Hyper Speed-Gro | 33% faster | bought with Qi Gems, endgame min-maxing |
Two rules the wiki math makes clear. First, on multi-harvest crops (blueberries, cranberries, strawberries), quality fertilizer only affects the first berry of each harvest - so Speed-Gro beats it on blueberries, adding one extra harvest and roughly +25% to seasonal earnings versus about +6% from fertilizer. Second, Speed-Gro never shortens regrow intervals, only initial growth, so it does nothing for a crop already harvested once.
The Agriculturist profession (+10% growth speed) stacks with Speed-Gro the same way - 20% combined with regular, 35% with Deluxe.
The Optimal Greenhouse Layout
The Greenhouse interior offers 120 plantable tiles that ignore seasons forever. The classic layout places four Iridium Sprinklers to water 96 of them; with Pressure Nozzles on those sprinklers you can cover every tile except one. Fruit trees can also be planted along the border walls inside the greenhouse.
What to grow: Ancient Fruit is the standard - 28 days to the first harvest, then a fruit every 7 days forever, zero replanting - feeding a keg line worth 1,650g per wine (2,310g with Artisan). Starfruit out-earns it per harvest if you tolerate replanting and buying 400g seeds, making it the choice when you have more kegs than fruit. Garden pots scattered around let you grow out-of-season quest or bundle crops without leaving the building.
The Ginger Island Farm
Ginger Island's farm adds 876 tillable tiles in total (776 on the main field), grows any crop in any season, and has no crows - so no scarecrows needed. The catches: Junimo Huts cannot be placed there, and it is far from your machines, so most players dedicate it to bulk ancient fruit or starfruit under iridium sprinklers, or use part of it for the Gourmand Frog's requests (grow Melon, then Wheat, then Garlic, leaving each unharvested until the frog inspects it - 5 Golden Walnuts each).
